Going forward it will be impossible to fully refuse the efficiency of digital living. Still, the solitary displays provide no true replacement for the physical encounters between bodies in space. But we adapted swiftly to the new circumstances and now we inhabit the futuristic bodiless space of technological wonder with ease. The removal and control of pigeons is a prominent example of keeping cities and society clean. Pigeon spikes and netting resemble hostile architecture for humans. A pigeon sitting in one place without moving gives the impression of a bird claiming its space. Following repeated failure to remove the bird, the cleaner arrives at acceptance of his inability to exercise total control over the situation. The sisyphean loop emphasises the human desire and inevitable failure to organise and exercise control over its environment. The sequence was shot in a single take in an empty gallery space using the tools of stage magic to create the illusion of an impossible loop. Doves are a classic theme in magic: an elegantly dressed magician produces living white doves, one after another, from thin air. In this sequence, a dirty pigeon is removed, over and over again, mirroring the absurdity of this classic magic act. In this theatrical magic performance Luis Carr explores this feeling and focuses on the disturbing and absurd side of magic. What do you see? - Astronauts, playing. There is a scene in Stanley Kubrick’s film "2001", where a pen slowly floats across the screen. Fascinated by this scene and the distinct aesthetics of the Apollo missions, Luis Carr explored methods to visualize such images on earth. For a short moment in everyday life, he creates his own universe fusing mime, dance, improvisation and magic. FILMTRIP is a series of events that combines performance, role-playing and cinema. Each part of the series is based on a feature film. During the performance, the spectators experience the action and atmosphere of a film from the perspective of a protagonist. Actors reproduce key scenes of the movie and involve the audience. Each individual will create his own personal experience of the event through interaction with the actors and the other guests.Since the venue is crucial to the film's authentic experience, FILMTRIP is set in off-locations. Exploring the grey area between reality and illusion, he is inviting the audience to consider and question the nature of wonder and astonishment itself. In his experimental magic practice he is particularly interested in the themes of repetition and the decay of wonder. In his performances, he playfully addresses the absurd, weird and irritating qualities of magic. With background and experience in traditional entertainment magic he has turned his attention to challenging the conventional rules of the craft. Slightly annoyed by artificial and dusty magic tropes he uses the tools of contemporary theatre to poke holes into our perception of reality. Luis Carr completed formal training in Magie Nouvelle at the CNAC, Centre National des Arts du Cirque in France in 2020. He is the co-founder of Magic Monday Leipzig and he is working collaboratively with visual and performance artists to explore new interactive formats for staging magic.
